Friday Five (9)
September 3rd
While I am sure there are others out there who do a Friday Five, it was one of our favorite authors, Cheryl Renee Herbsman who inspired us to start one of our own. Check out her amazing blog.
The way this works is each Friday morning we will post a prompt, question, topic, idea, etc that we will respond to. We will try to keep it general, anything related to movies, music, and books, however from time to time it may be a more specific topic.
We encourage you to post your own response in the comments section, too.
If you decide to start your own Friday Five, please credit it back to Cheryl Renee Herbsman’s blog.

GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!!
This week we are doing a vs. Friday Five!
What are your thoughts on the following:
audio books vs. reading books
movies vs. books
watching a live concert vs. listening to a CD
watching a TV show/series live vs. on DVD
Discuss!

1. Audio books Vs. Reading Books – This is a no brainer for me. I am TOTALLY old school. I am all for holding the real thing in my hot little hands. For turning the pages. For stacking it in the wobbly stacks of books on, near, or around my book shelf. There is a very small part of me who wonders how cool it would be to take a couple hundred books with me wherever I go… but… then I think about book marks (I am a book mark junkie). You would never need another bookmark. That would be a sad day!
2. Movies vs. Books – Well, there are a *small* handfull of cases where the movie is as good as the book, but in general the movie is never as good as the book. Unfortunately, the movie that plays in MY head while I read always far exceeds what movie technology can produce. The few exceptions still are never better than the book.
3. Concerts vs CD – In all but one case I have always preferred the live version vs the CD. Watching a band play live is the ultimate musical experience! Having their music on CD is just a perk to be able to listen to them whenever you want. But seeing a band play live always far exceeds the CD performance – with one exception. I LOVE Tori Amos. PLEASE don’t get me wrong. I have all her CDs and basically worship her. However, out of the 4-5 times I have seen her play live I have been mostly disappointed. In her defense, there always seemed to be something wrong during her concert, but all in all listening to the produced, mixed, and recorded music far exceeds her live performance. (Sorry Tori! I still love you and will keep going to your concerts, though!)
4. TV vs. DVR/DVD – I know this isn’t much of a vs. but in talking to my obsessed Netflix friends who are content to wait until an entire season or series is on DVD made me think of this vs. I guess I wasn’t born with a patience gene because waiting is NOT my thing. So, I prefer to watch it live. I will watch it on DVR if I cannot clone myself and watch two shows at once. And I will only watch it on DVD from something like Netflix as a last resort.
5. Vinyl vs CD – I am throwing this one on as a last vs. I mentioned before I am a child of the 80′s. Growing up, our household was transitioning between 8-track tapes to vinyl and eventually to cassette. It wasn’t until I was in High School that we moved to CD’s. While the sound quality of a CD far exceeds cassettes and vinyl, there is something nostalgic about listening to 80′s music on vinyl.

1. audio books vs. reading books: There is nothing I like more then reading a book. I like the way a book feels and even how it smells. I attempted an audio book once and while kind of entertaining, it couldn’t compete with how reading the book for myself makes me feel! Also, not so much a fan of the whole Kindle/Nook phenomenon yet- I’ve tried that too, but I’m still hanging onto my books!
2. movies vs. books: This is a tough one for me. Obviously I love books, but I’m also a movie junkie. When done right, a book to movie transition can be phenomenal. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy for example and most of Harry Potter as well. Sometimes, when the proper care isn’t taken, or if the story simply doesn’t translate, then a movie version is just a let down, that should have been left untouched.
3. watching a live concert vs. listening to a CD: Wow- this one totally depends on the band. I love going to concerts and most of the time, seeing the singer or gorup onstage is so much better then listening to the CD. There are exceptions though, and a bad contest can ruin the group in my mind forever. I liked Rascal Flatts until I saw them live. They were horrible. Now I can’t even listen to them on the radio.
Watching a TV show/series live vs. on DVD: I’m tossing DVR in there too. I’m not a fan of shows on DVD, I have a few series sitting on my shelf (Seinfeld) and while it was really fun to sit down and watch the series right when we bought the set, since then they’ve just sat there, reminding me that I paid too much for them. I’m also not a fan of watching shows live anymore. The DVR has spoiled me, and I find myself impatiently flipping through channels as I wait for the commercials to end and my show to be back. Which leads me to DVR. I love the DVR, I can’t live without it! I can tape all my favorite shows and watch them whenever I want, without commercials. I can fast forward and rewind and then get rid of it when I’m done. As far as I’m concerned- DVR = best invention ever
