Speak Loudly Book Drop

September 20, 2010, Posted by Georgia (~Gypsy Rae~) at 6:19 pm

We have been tackling the issues of banned books and censorship all month long at Eve’s Fan Garden, and as you may already know, yesterday it happened again.  If you have no idea what I am talking about, please take a minute to click over and read the blog post on Laurie Halse Anderson’s website about her book SPEAK, and a man who is trying to get it banned.  Go ahead, I will wait :)

Are you back?  OK!

As a response to the attempt at getting SPEAK banned, Paul Hankins (an English teacher and the creator of RAW INK Online) created a twitter feed- #Speak Loudly- where people can tweet their thoughts on the issue.  Almost immediately readers, authors, librarians etc. were tweeting and posting blogs.  People were coming together and Speaking Loudly in support of Laurie Halse Anderson and SPEAK.  People were sharing their deeply personal accounts of how SPEAK has helped them, or someone they know.  They were speaking out against Wesley Scroggins equating RAPE to soft porn.  It was honestly awe inspiring to watch as the YA community pulled together to support not only the author of SPEAK, but rape survivors everywhere.

As I read through each blog post and each tweet I was moved to tears.  I texted my friend Jen from Late Bloomer Online and we began discussing how we wanted to do something…  and that was when the idea hit!  We decided we wanted to organize a Speak Loudly Book Drop.

So here is how it will work.  Go out, buy a copy of SPEAK, and then sometime between now and October 2nd (the last day of Banned Book Week) leave that book somewhere in a public location where it is sure to be found.  Easy!  Once you have dropped your book, be sure to blog about it so we can see.  You can add your link below as soon as your post is up.

I created this book plate you can download and print up if you like.  Also, I encourage you to write a note to the person who finds your book.  My note will tell them why I wanted to leave a copy of SPEAK for them to find.

To download the book plate, just right click the image below then right click and save.

I know it is not a lot of time, but I do hope as many people as possible can participate in this Book Drop.  I am excited to see where everyone leaves their books!

This is a fantastic idea! Not that I ever need an excuse for my almost daily trips to the bookstore, but now I have a reason to go today! And I know just where I’ll be dropping it off:-)

I won’t have time to order one and get it here to Drop it but what an excellent idea! Maybe I will have to drop one after Banned book week gets over just so I can help spread the word. I cannot believe that people are still trying to do this. Thank you EFG for being the voice and helping spread the word of this injustice. I am going to DEF be ordering SPEAK this weekend and I will have to get 2 of them! Thank you !!!
