On Monday, June 13th, I had the pleasure of attending the only west coast stop of the this is teen author event at Books, Inc., in San Francisco. Authors attending the event included Maggie Stiefvater, Meg Cabot, and Libba Bray.

First, let me tell you a little bit about this is teen. this is teen is a unique book tour launched by Scholastic books geared towards drawing teens into reading and celebrating everyone’s love of reading. Not only is it a book tour, this is teen has also established a permanent facebook presence meant to be a launching ground for videos, trailers, blogs, contests, etc. all aimed at teens.

Next let me tell you a little about the three authors involved in this is teen. (from the Scholastic website)

Libba Bray

Libba Bray is the New York Times-bestselling author of the 2010 Michael L. Printz Award-winning novel Going Bovine and the acclaimed Gemma Doyle trilogy: A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, and The Sweet Far Thing. Maggie Stiefvater

Maggie Stiefvater is a writer, artist, and musician and the New York Times-bestselling author of Shiver, hailed by Publishers Weekly in a starred review as “a lyrical tale.” Since publication, rights to 32 foreign editions of Shiver have been licensed. Linger, the second book in the Shiver trilogy debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list, and Forever, the much-awaited conclusion to the trilogy, will be published July 12, 2011. Maggie is also the author of Lament: The Faerie Queen’s Deception and Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie, and the forthcoming novel The Scorpio Races, to be published October 18, 2011. She lives in Virginia with her husband and their two children. You can visit her online at

The event itself was fantastic! Not Your Mother’s Book Club put on a fantastic event! The three authors came out and each spent a good deal of time talking about their current book either about to be released (Forever, by Maggie Stiefvater) or already released (Beauty Queens, by Libba Bray and Abandon, by Meg Cabot).

Maggie shared all about how she steals to write her stories. NYMBC has a video of Maggie talking about how she really is a good person: Maggie’s Video She also told us – more like warned us – that we will need to buy several boxes of tissues to prepare to read Forever. Apparently she also thrives off of other people shedding tears, getting younger each time someone cries. (She said she is actually 84 years old… on a side note – my 7 year old totally believed her! I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing…)

Meg talked about how she became the writer she is today and what kinds of trials and tribulations were involved in that. Her story involved romance, failed math problems, many, many rejection letters from publishers, and more recently Greek mythology.

Libba expounded on how she really still doesn’t know what her book, Beauty Queens is about. *wink* She decided to ask the audience for help in writing the synopsis of Beauty Queens Mad Libs style! Here is a video of this outrageous adventure! Beauty Queens Mad Libs

After the three authors talked about themselves, what this is teen means to them, and the book they were promoting, they answered a few really awesome questions. Then they got right down to business signing books and visiting with each and every person there.

I was so excited to be invited to the San Fran this is teen event AND in addition to also be invited to interview these three fine authors. I want to capture the spirit of the interview, so I will post that in a separate blog later this week. After the interview, we got together for a group shot. My dearest friend Valerie and her son were there as well as my minions. That is me in the back with the white shirt, Libba is holding Kai, Maggie is next to me and Meg is next to her.

I just have to say if you get a chance to attend the final event in Florida, do so. it was an amazing experience! Meg, Maggie and Libba play off of each other so well! And when you can, be sure to pick up their books. Beauty Queens and Abandon are already on the shelves. (I have not had a chance to read Abandon yet, but plan to. Beauty Queens is amazing!) And, on July 12th, be sure to pick up Forever, the third book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series.

Thank you to NYMBC, Books, Inc., Scholastic, and all the authors for making this a very memorable event for all of us!

PS… check back later this week for the interview blog AND a big give away!!! If you are wanting to read Forever early you will want to enter this contest!
