Boy do I have a great title to tempt you today!
Today we are featuring 77 Days in September, by Ray Gorham.

Synopsis (from Amazon):

On a Friday afternoon before Labor Day, Americans are getting ready for the holiday weekend, completely unaware of a long-planned terrorist plot about to be launched against the country. Kyle Tait is settling in for his flight home to Montana when a single nuclear bomb is detonated 300 miles above the heart of America. The blast, an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP), destroys every electrical device in the country, and results in the crippling of the power grid, the shutting down of modern communications, and bringing to a halt most forms of transportation.

Kyle narrowly escapes when his airplane crashes on take-off, only to find himself stranded 2,000 miles from home in a country that has been forced, from a technological standpoint, back to the 19th Century. Confused, hurt, scared, and alone, Kyle must make his way across a hostile continent to a family he’s not even sure has survived the effects of the attack. As Kyle forges his way home, his frightened family faces their own struggles for survival in a community trying to halt its slow spiral into chaos and anarchy.

77 Days in September follows Kyle and his wife, Jennifer, as they are stretched past their breaking point, but find in their devotion to each other the strength to persevere.

We had a chance to interview author Ray Gorham!

EFG: When did you really feel like you had become a writer?

Ray Gorham: I can’t say that I am at that point yet, though I feel like I am starting down that road.  During the day I’m self-employed building log homes, so it still feels like writing is more of a hobby than anything, but once I sold my thousandth book, and reviews were coming back in from strangers that were quite positive, then I started to feel a little bit like I was a “writer.”  If I ever get to the point that I can step away from construction permanently, then at that point I would probably say that would be when I truly consider myself to be a “writer.”

EFG: What is you favorite thing about being a writer?

RG: Right now, the favorite thing about writing is the building of the story.  I have several book ideas that I am working on, and I’ll find my thoughts drifting during the day to considering various plot ideas, character traits, and even sometimes the dialog.  One nice thing about writing is that everything in the world we create happens just the way we want it to.

EFG: Where did you get the inspiration to write “77 Days in September?”

RG: In my early writing stages I was reading a piece by an “expert” who said that no one writes stories about people with nice, happy families because they are boring and no one wants to read about them.  That kind of ticked me off, because I thought I fit into that category, so I wanted to come up with a story that would prove him wrong.  I also wanted my main character to be a decent guy who loves his wife and doesn’t cheat on her.  From there it became, what would be the ultimate thing a guy could overcome to return to his family?  At first I thought he might get lost in the woods, or mugged and robbed in some distant city, but none of those things had the drama to make a gripping story.  Somewhere along the story evolution the thought of an EMP came to me and everything clicked.  I remember telling the guy who worked for me about it and it just feeling right.  From there everything just seemed to fall into place.

EFG: What am you working on next?

RG: Before I ever published this story I started writing a book about a guy who can see the future, and how it impacts those around him.  I’m a little over halfway through, but am worried because it is a totally different type of story than my first book, so not sure how people who have read my first book will respond.  I’m hoping to get that one done fairly soon, then writing a couple more in the same genre as my first.  After that, though, I think I will try some different things so I don’t get bored with what might feel like repetitive plot lines.

EFG: If you could have dinner with any author, who would it be, and why?

RG: I think I would have to say Michael Crichton.  Sometimes his plot lines get a little far-fetched, but one of the things that I really like about his books is that you usually learn something interesting, and I’d like to replicate that aspect of his writing in my books.  I personally prefer to read non-fiction, so if I could blend good story lines while providing useful, interesting information, I think that would be the perfect situation for me.  So in my dinner with him I’d love to pick his brain and find out how he’d come up with the educational aspect of his novels.  Plus I heard he was a wonderful, decent guy, so he’d probably be a fun person to visit with.
