For as long as she can remember, Rio has dreamt of the sand and sky Above—of life beyond her underwater city of Atlantia. But in a single moment, all her plans for the future are thwarted when her twin sister, Bay, makes an unexpected decision, stranding Rio Below. Alone, ripped away from the last person who knew Rio’s true self—and the powerful siren voice she has long hidden—she has nothing left to lose.
Guided by a dangerous and unlikely mentor, Rio formulates a plan that leads to increasingly treacherous questions about her mother’s death, her own destiny, and the complex system constructed to govern the divide between land and sea. Her life and her city depend on Rio to listen to the voices of the past and to speak long-hidden truths.
We are really excited to be part of the Atlantia Blog Tour. When I heard Ally Condie had a new book coming out I KNEW I would have to read it, because I LOVED her Matched series. Atlantia is such a unique and cool idea, I can’t wait for everyone to read it.
For our stop on the Atlantia tour, we get to share a playlist Ally created for her book. There are some excellent songs here, I am happy to know Ally has fabulous taste in music Be sure to read to the end, and enter our giveaway for an Atlantia necklace!
It’s probably pretty obvious that water plays a huge role in ATLANTIA (the setting is an underwater city, after all!) and I thought it would be fun to put together a playlist that reflects that element and the characters in the story. Many of the characters have water names—Rio means river in Spanish, of course, and Bay also has a name that represents a body of water that touches both ocean and land. And Maire and Oceana both have names that mean “sea” or “ocean.” Even True’s last name (“Beck”) means “brook.” I hope readers like this playlist. Maybe it will just make them want to go swimming.
1. The Water by Johnny Flynn (featuring Laura Marling).
Rio is the main character in the book, so it feels right to start the playlist with a song that mentions a river. This song also makes me think of Maire, especially these lines: “The water sustains me without even trying/The water can’t drown me, I’m done with my dying.” I love the duet here and the way the voices come together but stay very separate—symbolic for the book in many ways.
2. Down by the Water by the Decembrists.
“See this ancient riverbed/See where all the follies led.” The opening line makes me think of Atlantia the city, and all the ways the people who came before made a mess of things for Rio and Bay and the characters in Atlantia.
3. Sea of Love by The National.
I love the feel of the music for this one, the urgency lent by the beat, and the line “If I stay here, trouble will find me/If I stay here, I’ll never leave.” I think that line is true of everyone in ATLANTIA to some extent, but especially Rio and Maire.
4. What the Water Gave Me by Florence and the Machine.
If there’s ever a movie made of ATLANTIA, I can hear this playing in the background as Rio walks through the deepmarket.
5. Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage.
This song was around back when I was a teenager, and I’ve always loved it. I think we all have this side to us, and Maire in ATLANTIA certainly does.
6. The Downeaster Alexa by Show of Hands (originally recorded by Billy Joel).
Ships, sailing, hard lives, water—everything here echoes the feel I wanted for ATLANTIA. I always get chills when I hear the lines “There are giants out there in the canyons /But a good captain can’t fall asleep.”
7. River by Lights.
Since ATLANTIA is Rio’s story, it seems right to end the playlist with another river song, and this one is beautiful and speaks of her journey and her heart’s desire.
